Almost 3,000 pilgrims needed the attention of Red Cross volunteers during the Cartago pilgrimage

According to the Costa Rican Red Cross report as of Friday, August 2nd, 2,935 people needed to be treated during the Romería 2019.

Compared to last year's statistics, 103 fewer cases were registered.

According to the volunteers, 1,032 men and 1,903 women had medical problems during the journey this year.

Of those treated, it was necessary to take 54 pilgrims to the hospital, due to health complications.

Most emergencies were recorded due to muscle aches, low blood pressure, headaches, bumps, and falls.

As A.M. Costa Rica has been reporting, La Romería, which means pilgrimage, is a mass journey of the faithful to pay homage to the Virgen de Los Angeles at the Basilica located in the Province of Cartago*. An estimated two million people walk to the church every year.

The Red Cross was also promoting the EcoRomería plan to educate pilgrims on how to collect their trash. During the pilgrims' journey were 40 stands with members of the Red Cross, who were collecting the garbage the pilgrims carry such as food wrappers, plastic bottles, organic food remains, etc.

According to the Red Cross, companies donated $113,300 for this year's trash collection program. The investment covered the expenses of 1,200 volunteers, who were distributed along the 35 kilometers of the pilgrims' route.

Due to the high flow of pilgrims and vehicles going to the church in Cartago, the traffic police had to make changes like:

- The toll collected in the city of Tres Ríos was suspended.

- An extra lane was opened on the Florencio del Castillo highway to be used exclusively by pedestrians.

- The plate prohibition regulation was not applied within the city of San José.

The work of 270 traffic officers controlling the mass journey of pilgrims was necessary.

And, over 1,000 police officers participated in an operation that included the mounted police units, motorcycle units, and an air surveillance unit.
