Additional controls will be put into place outside Juan Santamaría International Airport By
the A.M. Costa Rica staff
According to AERIS, the company in charge of the administration at Juan Santamaría international airport* in the province of Alajuela, the external areas of arrival or departure of passengers will have increased security as of August. According to the firm, to avoid disorder and risk for passengers, a restricted parking area was established for use soley by the Chamber of Tourism's authorized transport. The authorized transport will have access to the passenger arrival and departure area's. Shuttle companies must be duly registered in the Chamber's database, under the category of the tour operator, in order to gain access to the restricted area. According to AERIS, this does not mean that individuals cannot arrive in their vehicles or by bus to the airport. Airport buses already have limited parking in an area just outside of airport property. A large parking area currently exists for individual car traffic. Transit police confirmed that everybody could reach the Juan Santamaría international airport by car, taxi, shuttle, or bus. The police clarified this point due to false information being circulated on social networks. The misinformation claimed the police had closed the entrance of the Juan Santamaría airport to cars for security reasons. According to German Marín, Director of the transit police, anyone traveling to the airport or picking up a passenger from the airport can enter through the public entrance ramps. "Officers will not stop the entry of cars at the entrance to the airport," said Marín. According to AERIS, the airport has designated public entrance areas, entry areas for those who work in the airport, and areas for loading and unloading of merchandise and other services. The main entrance area has been specifically designated for airport taxis, buses, and shuttles. The only way people may be fined for illegal parking is in an area with a yellow line on the curb, or with signs indicating ‘no entry’. "Many people enter the airport and want to park as close as possible to passenger entry and exit doors to load or unload suitcases, but it's forbidden. There are signs indicating this." said director Marín. "Cars must enter into the parking area and not in a restricted area." The parking area is directly in front of the main entrance. The parking fee is $2 per hour. Police have also confirmed they have increased the controls to detect illegal transport, known as pirate taxi or Uber, "since this type of private taxi service has been increasing at the Juan Santamaría international airport." they said. Nobody should arrive at the airport in an Uber, said transit police. From January to April, transit police fined 2,286 drivers illegally working as a private transport service. ----------------------- How much is the fine for illegal parking in your country?
