Although Halloween is not a typical Costa Rican celebration with the same fanfare as the United States, that doesn't mean there are not spooky parties this weekend.


Halloween in Costa Rica combines colorful folklore from the day of the masquerade with modern-day merriment, offering a variety of events.


On Saturday.


Masquerade festival at Libertad Park in Desamparados in San José. The activity includes masquerade workshops for children, music and parades among other activities. The festival starts at 9 a.m. Free admission. Make reservations by calling 8692-0742


Masquerade Festival at the Civic Center for Peace in Desamparados in San José. The activity starts at 10 a.m. and includes a parade, live music and folk meals for purchase. Free admission.


On Saturday and Sunday.


Katrinas Festival in San José downtown, organized by the Municipality of San José. The festival begins with a parade at 11 a.m. at Paseo de Los Estudiantes Avenue. The festival includes parades, live music, dance and prizes for the best costumes. There will also be souvenirs, drinks and food for purchase. Free admission.


Katrinas and Zombies Festival at Simón Bolívar Zoo in downtown San José. The festival starts at 10 a.m. There will be live music, costume and makeup contests, dance, children's activities and food for purchase. Ticket's $7 pp. Special ticket rate of $2 for people who arrive in their costume. Free entry for kids under 4 years old. Tickets are on sale at the zoo box office.



 

On Sunday.


Masquerade parade in the Santo Domingo Canton Central Park in Heredia, organized by the Dominican Masquerade Commission. The activity starts at 7 p.m. and includes live music. Free admission.


At local movie theaters, the Halloween films playing are:


  • "Prey for the Devil," is about a nun who prepares to perform an exorcism and comes face to face with a demonic force with mysterious ties to her past. Starring: Jacqueline Byers, Virginia Madsen and Colin Salmon.


  • "Smile," is about after witnessing a bizarre, traumatic incident involving a patient, Dr. Rose Cotter starts experiencing frightening occurrences that she can't explain. Rose must confront her troubling past to survive and escape her horrifying new reality. Starring: Sosie Bacon, Jessie T. Usher and Kyle Gallner.


  • "Mal de Ojo" or the evil eye in English, is about Nala, a 13-year-old girl from the city, who travels with her family to her grandmother's home in the countryside, to try to find a cure for her little sister's mysterious illness - But she'll soon find her granny is not exactly what she seems. Starring: Ofelia Medina, Paola Miguel and Samantha Castillo.


Most of the movie theaters are requesting tickets to be purchased online, such as CCM CinemasCinepolis and Cinemark.
