Colorado-headquartered
Liberty Latin America giant
telecommunications company acquired the
Movistar telephone company in Costa
Rica. Liberty
Latin America is a leading
communications company operating in over
20 countries across Latin America and
the Caribbean under the consumer brands
VTR, Flow, Liberty, Más Móvil, BTC and
CableTica. The company is traded on the
NASDAQ Global Select Market under the
symbol LILA. In 2018,
Liberty Latin America spun off the main
company and began operating
independently from Liberty Global, which
is the British-Dutch-American
multinational telecommunications company
with headquarters in London, Amsterdam
and Denver. The U.S.
company announced the acquisition of all
the operations of the Movistar brand
from the company Telefonica Costa Rica
for $500 million. Liberty also owns 80%
of the shares of the Costa Rican cable
company CableTica. According
to the firm, the goal of this
negotiation is to combine the operations
of Telefónica Costa Rica with those of
CableTica to offer a broader service in
the country.
"We are
excited to increase our investment in
the country," Balan Nair, president
and CEO of Liberty Latin America,
said. The firm
said that the clients of CableTica and
Movistar will maintain their current
conditions in their services. Liberty
in Latin America is providing
communications services such as
digital video, broadband internet,
telephony and mobile services, as well
as business products and services such
as enterprise-grade connectivity, a
data center, hosting and managed
solutions, among others. Liberty
is one of many U.S. companies
investing in Costa Rica. Recently,
the Delaware headquartered
Delbridge Solutions, a tech firm
on data engineering &
analytics opened a branch in
Guanacaste.
