A U.S. citizen, surnamed Kjar-Arnbal, was arrested by the Migration Police due to an alleged arrest warrant against him.

According to the brief report issued by the General Directorate of Migration, Kjar-Arnbal was detained during a road surveillance operation that took place in La Sabana Canton, San José.

When Migration officers inspected the U.S. citizen’s documents they realized that he had no legal record of entering the country.

In a more detailed investigation of Kjar-Arnbal's identity, officers found that he had an international arrest warrant issued by the State of Mississippi for allegedly committing the crime of selling a substance known as MDMA, more commonly known as ecstasy or molly.

The expat also had served a sentence for an infraction of the Psychotropic Law in Costa Rica, Migration said.

According to the U.S. National Institute on Drug Abuse, MDMA is a synthetic drug that acts as a stimulant and hallucinogen. It produces an energizing effect, distortions in time and perception, and enhanced enjoyment from sensory experiences. It has also been described as an entactogen, a drug that can increase self-awareness and empathy.

Kjar-Arnbal was taken to the Immigration Apprehension Center in San José, where he must wait for the extradition process to the United States to be completed.

A similar case happened recently when Migration Police detained another U.S. citizen, surnamed Prikryl, for allegedly having no record of his entry into the country.
