Costa Rica signed an agreement to share
specific information on U.S. visas,
through an immediate internet response,
following the legislation of both
countries, the embassy said.
According to the embassy, the agreement between both countries aims to improve, maintain and strengthen border security and migration. This agreement between the General Directorate of Migration of Costa Rica and the U.S. Customs and Border Protection, CBP, allows an expedited response on information to identify travelers who present an invalid, falsified, canceled or revoked U.S. visa. ![]() "Joint work and bilateral cooperation will allow those travelers who have the appropriate authorization to visit us, to enter our hemisphere, resulting in a safer region for all," said Marcos Mandojana Charge D’Affaires of the United States Embassy. "This agreement is vital for strengthening security on the continent." Under the terms of the agreement, when Costa Rica requests a visa check, CBP will send an immediate response on that visa status. With the information provided by CBP, Costa Rican authorities may apply the guidelines in cases of: * The validity of an unexpired visa issued by the United States, when third-country nationals request entry or permission to transit through Costa Rica. * The adjudication of visa applications to travel to Costa Rica. The information on U.S. visas will speed up the process of confirming entry to the country of those immigrants who must present both the restricted or consulted visa, but who have a multiple entry U.S. visa such as tourist visa, crew visa or business visa exclusively type B1-B2, B1 or B2, type D, C1 / D multi-income visa. "This will help reinforce the safe and orderly migration that is constantly taking place at border posts," Raquel Vargas, Director of Migration said. According to the embassy, both countries will have technical measures to protect the shared information from accidental or illicit destruction, accidental loss, disclosure, alteration or unauthorized access, confidentiality and integrity of the data. Reasonable measures will be used to guarantee that only those who are authorized have access to personal data.
