The U.S. First Lady Jill Biden and her daughter, Ashley Biden, will visit Costa Rica from Saturday to Monday, announced the U.S. Embassy.

The First Lady's visit is part of her tour in the region. She’ll make stops in Ecuador and Panamá. This is all before the U.S. hosted Summit of the Americas that will take place in Los Angeles in June from 6 to 10.

"During her trip, the First Lady will emphasize the importance of the U.S. partnership with these three nations as well as their commitment to democracy," the embassy said in its statement.

On Saturday, the First Lady will arrive at the Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) located in Alajuela Province. That day she'll visit the Chief of Mission Residence where she will meet Costa Rican women who have participated in U.S. Department of State programs focused on women’s entrepreneurship and economic empowerment.

Afterward, the First Lady will have dinner with President Rodrigo Chaves and First Lady Signe Zeikate.

On Sunday, Biden will visit the National Children’s Hospital to highlight the U.S. and Costa Rican collaboration on combating cancer. She is planning to deliver remarks.

Then, she will meet with U.S. embassy staff at the Chief of Mission Residence in San José.

On Monday, the First Lady will visit a community center supported through the Sembremos Seguridad, or Planting the Seeds of Security in the English language.

The program is led by the Costa Rican government with support from the U.S. Department of State. "It aims to transform the security of local communities by working with local governments, NGOs and law enforcement to provide highly successful prevention programs, including healthy outlets and safe spaces for Costa Rican youth," the embassy said.

The First Lady's visit ends on Monday when she departs for Joint Base Andrews, located in the U.S. State of Maryland.

Before arriving in Costa Rica, Biden's agenda includes meeting with President Guillermo Lasso and First Lady María de Lourdes Alcívar at Ecuador Carondelet Palace. As well as meeting First Lady of Panamá, Yazmín Colón de Cortizo, at the Panama Presidential Palace.

Biden is the third U.S. First Lady visiting Costa Rica in 25 years.

In 2006, First Lady Laura Bush, wife of the then U.S. President George W. Bush, visited the country.

She was invited to the inauguration ceremony of President Oscar Arias.

In May 1997, Hillary Clinton, along with her husband, then U.S. President Bill Clinton, visited the country.

They met the then President José María Figueres and the First Lady, Josette Altmann.

According to the U.S. Department of State archives, six U.S. Presidents have visited Costa Rica during their ruling period: Herbert C. Hoover in 1928, John F. Kennedy in 1963, Lyndon B. Johnson in 1968, George H. W. Bush in 1989, Bill Clinton in 1997 and Barack Obama in 2013.
