The U.S. First Lady Jill Biden and her daughter, Ashley Biden, will visit Costa Rica from Saturday to Monday, announced the U.S. Embassy.
The First Lady's visit is part of her tour in the region. She’ll make stops in Ecuador and Panamá. This is all before the U.S. hosted Summit of the Americas that will take place in Los Angeles in June from 6 to 10.
"During her trip, the First Lady will emphasize the importance of the U.S. partnership with these three nations as well as their commitment to democracy," the embassy said in its statement.
On Saturday, the First Lady will arrive at the Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) located in Alajuela Province. That day she'll visit the Chief of Mission Residence where she will meet Costa Rican women who have participated in U.S. Department of State programs focused on women’s entrepreneurship and economic empowerment.
Afterward, the First Lady will have dinner with President Rodrigo Chaves and First Lady Signe Zeikate.
On Sunday, Biden will visit the National Children’s Hospital to highlight the U.S. and Costa Rican collaboration on combating cancer. She is planning to deliver remarks.
Then, she will meet with U.S. embassy staff at the Chief of Mission Residence in San José.
On Monday,
the First Lady will visit a community
center supported through the Sembremos
Seguridad, or Planting the Seeds of
Security in the English language.
The
program is led by the Costa
Rican government with support
from the U.S. Department of
State. "It aims to transform the
security of local communities by
working with local governments,
NGOs and law enforcement to
provide highly successful
prevention programs, including
healthy outlets and safe spaces
for Costa Rican youth," the
embassy said. The
First Lady's visit ends on
Monday when she departs for
Joint Base Andrews, located in
the U.S. State of Maryland. Before
arriving in Costa Rica, Biden's
agenda includes meeting with President
Guillermo Lasso and First Lady
María de Lourdes Alcívar at
Ecuador Carondelet Palace. As
well as meeting First Lady of
Panamá, Yazmín Colón de Cortizo,
at the Panama Presidential
Palace. Biden
is the third U.S. First Lady
visiting Costa Rica in 25
years.
She
was invited to the inauguration
ceremony of President Oscar
Arias.
They
met the then President José
María Figueres and the First
Lady, Josette Altmann. According
to the U.S. Department of State
archives, six U.S. Presidents
have visited Costa Rica during
their ruling period: Herbert C.
Hoover in 1928, John F. Kennedy
in 1963, Lyndon B. Johnson in
1968, George H. W. Bush in 1989,
Bill Clinton in 1997 and Barack
Obama in 2013.
