By the A.M. Costa Rica staff
U.S. Army Gen. Laura Richardson, commander of U.S. Southern Command (SOUTHCOM), will meet today with President Rodrigo Chaves-Robles.
According to the U.S. Embassy, Richardson’s four-day agenda in Costa Rica includes meetings with Chaves and with the Minister of Public Security Jorge Luis Torres among other government leaders.
Richardson aims to address security threats and challenges of mutual countries' concern, due to the longstanding bilateral security partnership between the United States and Costa Rica.
Among the subjects to address are security cooperation between the U.S. and Costa Rica, disaster preparedness, cyber security, respect for human rights, integration of women in security, peace, defense missions and transnational criminal organizations among others.
Richardson
will also join Minister Torres in
co-hosting this year’s Central
American Security Conference
(CENTSEC), where defense and
public-security ministers from
across the Americas and Europe to
exchange ideas, experiences, and
perspectives on regional
collaboration to address security
challenges in the 21st century. "This
year’s CENTSEC will include plenary
sessions on critical infrastructure
protection in the cyber domain,
climate change and environmental
security, and human rights," the
Embassy said in its statement. The
United States, through U.S.
SOUTHCOM, sponsors CENTSEC annually
to facilitate dialogue between
regional security leaders as part of
a continuing commitment to
strengthen cooperative ties and
achieve shared security goals. The
conference was last hosted by Costa
Rica in 2016.
