The progression of the construction of the first three-level highway in Costa Rica allows the opening of the borderline roads of this project.

According to the Ministry of Public Transports, drivers who must travel between the cantons of Tibás and La Uruca in San José Province will now be able to drive over part of the marginal roads located on the first floor of the highway, known as Circunvalación Norte.

The goal of this measure is to speed up the traffic on the borderline roads under the project construction zone.

The construction of the first three-level highway in Costa Rica and the largest viaduct in the country Circunvalación Norte project has 90% progress and it is scheduled to be inaugurated in December.

The 3.35-mile-long highway was budgeted at more than $222 million, which was covered by a loan from the Central American Bank for Economic Integration.

The highway starts from route 108 in La Uruca Canton to Route 32, which connects with the Bicentennial traffic circle. Authorities estimate that in December the construction of the two intersections, which make up a three-level highway, will be completed.

The highway will connect four routes: Route 39 with the Inter-American Highway (from Panama to Nicaragua) then with Route 27 (between San José and Puntarenas) and finally Route 32 (between San José and Limón).

According to the ministry, segment construction in the Uruca Canton is 90% complete. At the lower level of the road, two lines of a tunnel and a traffic circle. On the upper level, a four-lane viaduct is built to connect with Route 39.

In the second segment of the highway, located between the districts of León XIII and Colima, a bridge and a tunnel are being built.

The third stage is to build a 1.3-kilometer four-lane highway and an intersection that would connect Route 39 and Heredia Province. This road is already fully built.

Another segment of the highway is located between Colima and Route 32, where they’re building a 1,500-meter four-lane highway, as well as the construction of ramps to reach the top-level highway. This section of the road is already finished.

Another segment of the highway is located in Calle Blancos District. It includes intersections to the new three-level highway. On the lower level, a six-lane highway is built. At the middle level, a two-lane traffic circle was built. On the upper level, a four-lane elevated highway is built. This section of the road is 98% complete.

The last segment of the highway is between Route 32 and Calle Blancos. It is a 1.5-kilometer road to reach Route 39 which includes a tunnel.
