Despite the strong wave of infections and deaths caused by covid-19, President Carlos Alvarado along with key members of his government embarked on a work trip to Mexico and the United States.

As of Friday, authorities reported 505,163 covid-19 cases since 2020, of which 92,554 are active cases and 5,949 deaths listed as covid-19 related.

According to the government, Alvarado traveled to Mexico on Friday accompanied by Foreign Minister Rodolfo Solano. During this work tour, Avarado met with the President of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

The trip to Mexico was justified to attend the summit of The Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) that took place on Saturday.

On Sunday Alvarado traveled to the state of New York, United States, to attend the 76th General Assembly of the United Nations that will take place today.  Alvarado is accompanied by the first lady, Claudia Dobles, Foreign Minister Rodolfo Solano, Minister of Environment Andrea Meza, Costa Rican Ambassador to the United Nations Rodrigo A. Carazo, Vice Foreign Minister Christian Guillermet and Ambassador Adriana Solano.

According to the government, one of the goals of Alvarado's trip and his committee is to support the representative of Costa Rica, Nancy Hernández, as a judge at the Inter-American Court of Human Rights (IACHR).

Other topics to be discussed at the meetings are the political and immigration situation in the region, as well as access to more post-pandemic loans to improve the economy.

As for the United Nations General Assembly, Alvarado will discuss issues related to climate change, seeking support for the Fund to Alleviate COVID-19 Economics (FACE), among other issues.

During Alvarado's week of travel, Vice President Epsy Campbell Barr will assume the Presidency.  The president and his committee are expected to return to Costa Rica on Thursday.

Last year, Alvarado participated in the U.N. summit virtually.
