By the A.M. Costa Rica staff On Wednesday, the Costa Rican popular folk artist Dionisio Cabal-Antillón, 67, singer, writer, historian, director, screenwriter, radio and television producer, died. According to the Ministry of Culture, throughout his career, Cabal received multiple recognitions for his commitment to representing Costa Rican folklore. Among many awards were the Joaquín García Monge Award, in 2000; the ACAM award for his program "Trovadores de la Quinta Noche", awards for his support of national music in 2006; the ACAM award for Best National Music Composer, and Best National Songwriter, in 2008; as well as the Award for Intangible Heritage Conservation. Among his most famous books published in Costa Rica are "Refranero de uso costarricense (2010)", "Aguizotes: raíces mágicas de Costa Rica (2011)", "El vuelo a la libertad (2011)" and "¿Qué tiene el rey en la panza?" The folk artist was hospitalized at the Calderón Guardia Hospital in San José, in serious condition due to complications related to covid-19. Confirmation of the artist's death was released by his son Antonio Cabal. One of Cabal's most recent performances took place at the National Theater.
