The peak tourism season is just around the corner and park rangers prepare to manage an expected high flow of visitors, according to the National System of Conservation Areas, Sinac.

In Costa Rica, the high season is classified into two periods. The highest visitation is in summer, between December and April, which include important holidays such as Christmas, the New Year break and Easter. The second period with a little less visitation is from May to July, which coincides with the school break season in North America and Europe, according to the Ministry of Tourism.

The training for the park rangers took place in the auditorium of the Tortuguero National Park, in Limón Province. The course's goals are to improve their skills in recognizing the impacts of visitors in protected areas and identifying acceptable limits for tourist flows in the zone, Sinac said in their statement.

According to Rafael Gutiérrez, director of Sinac, by training the park rangers and improving their capacities, the experience of the tourists will be favored. "When visitors are allowed access to a protected area, the responsibility is to guarantee the visitor a positive experience and also the conservation of natural resources," Gutiérrez said.

The training also includes techniques on how to determine which are the most appropriate attractions to convey conservation messages to tourists, and design innovative experiences for visitors, among others.

Currently, all national parks and protected wild areas allow tourists without any capacity restrictions. Sinac offers an online booking system to enter the parks in Chirripó, Tortuguero, Tapantí, San Lucas Island, Manuel Antonio Beach, and the Irazú and Poás volcanoes. For the rest of the national parks, visitors can make their cover payment using a credit or debit card at the park’s box office.

According to the institute, European tourists are increasing.
