An access ramp to the beach is now available at Herradura Beach in Puntarenas Province.
The 48-meter path was built by the Dona Tapa organization with the help of the employees of Garabito Municipality, Tourism Institute and Boston Scientific company in the collection of plastic lids.
The builders applied eco-friendly techniques such as implementing some retractable walkways. They used thousands of plastic lids.
The retractable walkways installed on the beach and two amphibious chairs will allow for more accessibility to the shore. The retractable walkways and chairs were delivered to the Adapted Surfing Sports Association, an organization in charge of teaching this water sport to people with physical disabilities.
Costa Rica has a law in place, Law 7600, which regulates the tourism industry in the country to include accessibility to tourist sites for people with disabilities in places such as hotels, theaters, museums, volcanoes and national parks among others.
According to the Tourism Institute, there are still challenges to be met regarding access to the beaches for people with physical disabilities. There is still a need for direct access to the water, user-friendly showers, parks or bathrooms.
Herradura is the thirteenth beach with an access ramp to the beach, others are Tamarindo Beach in Guanacaste, Espadilla Beach in Puntarenas Province and Cieneguita Beach in Limón, among others. --------------------
