As of March, the Daniel Oduber International Airport (LIR), located in Guanacaste Province, recorded 164,034 passengers.
This figure shows the recovery of the level of passengers registered before the pandemic in 2019, approximately 166,240 visitors.
The upward trend has been evident since the beginning of this year. In January, the airport recovered 87% of passengers of the traffic levels of 2019. While in February, there was a 90% recovery.
Data tracked 530 international flights, in which more than 164,000 passengers arrived.
According to VINCI Airports, the company in charge of managing the airport, the reduction of health restrictions helped the tourism recovery. "The increase in air traffic has a positive impact on local economies and industries that depends on tourism, such as shops, restaurants and transportation," the firm said in its statement.
"The previous year we were still adapting to the changes of the pandemic and this year we are very positive with the continued recovery of traffic," César Jaramillo, General Manager of the airport said.
As of April 1, the covid pass requirement for fully-vaccinated people was eliminated, as well as the policy insurance requirement for unvaccinated people.
Since then, the government does not require tourists to follow any of the requirements established during the pandemic, such as presenting a negative covid-19 test, quarantine upon arrival, being fully vaccinated against covid-19 or travel policy insurance.
The online Health Pass was also disabled.
As part of the country's strategy to boost tourism, recently six Costa Rican tourism companies, with the support of the Institute of Tourism, participated in the World Travel Market Latin America Fair that took place at the Expo Center Norte in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
According
to the Tourism Institute's
statistics, last
year 1,347,055 tourists
arrived in the country,
where 94% arrived by air.
