The team of surgeons from the Rafael Ángel Calderón Guardia Public Hospital, located in San José, achieved the first liver transplant from an adult living donor to another adult patient.

According to Social Security, the surgery was carried out by a medical team of specialists trained at the Asam Medical Center Hospital in South Korea.

The team of more than 40 specialists included surgeons, nurses, anesthesiologists, donation and transplant coordinators, among others.

The medical team took 19 hours to complete the surgery, from 5 am until midnight, Social Security said.

"We are very proud that such a highly specialized team performed this procedure, which is a milestone in medicine in our country", said Dr. Taciano Lemos Pires, leader of the surgical team.

Specialists first tested and analyzed the recipient and the donor to confirm they were compatible.

This type of surgery is carried out in two rooms. One room has a team of surgeons that removes the recipient's diseased liver, while the other team removes part of the donor's healthy liver.

After surgery, the patient was taken to the recovery room where their health condition is currently being monitored 24/7 by the medical team.

Hospital Calderón Guardia is one of the largest and most important hospitals in the country, providing a wide range of medical services to patients. The hospital was founded in 1945 and was named after Dr. Rafael Ángel Calderón Guardia, who was a former President of Costa Rica from 1940 to 1944 and a supporter of social welfare programs, including healthcare.

Hospital Calderón Guardia has over 1,000 beds and offers services in areas such as internal medicine, surgery, pediatrics, gynecology, obstetrics, and psychiatry. It also has a number of specialized clinics, including a cancer center, a cardiovascular center, a nephrology and dialysis center, and a neurology and neurosurgery center.

The hospital is affiliated with the University of Costa Rica and serves as a teaching hospital for medical students and residents. It is also a major referral center for patients from throughout Costa Rica and the surrounding region.

According to the U.S. National Center of Biotechnology, the first liver transplant using a living donor was performed in 1989 by Dr. Christoph Broelsch at the University of Chicago Medical Center.
