This year, from January to August, Traffic Police reported 314 traffic accident deaths, 74 more than the 240 deaths reported in the same period of last year, according to the Ministry of Public Transports.
According to the police report, 147 deaths were motorcyclists, equivalent to 47% of deaths. Forty deaths were of sedan car drivers and over 21 bike riders died, police said.
The leading
cause of road accidents this year is
speeding. Authorities registered more than
106 fatalities caused by speeding, 50
fatalities caused by drivers driving in
the opposite lane, and more than 39 people
among others for recklessness committed by
pedestrians, police said.
Recently, police targeted more than 40,000 people who received a fine for reckless driving, such as wrongful parking, speeding, driving within the restricted area in the city and failing to stop at a red light.
Police also identified 1,203 DUI drivers with more than 0.75 grams of alcohol in their system. These drivers committed the "A-Level" fine. They were arrested and their vehicles were impounded. Drivers also have to pay a fine of approximately $500, plus take a six-point penalty on their driving record.
Also, over 7,900 drivers were fined for not using safety devices. Of these, 828 drivers were fined for carrying children without the proper safety devices.
Last year, more than 300 people died in traffic accidents.
Traffic Police urge people to report people suspected of breaking the law to the police by dialing the 911 emergency line. ------------------ Professional's
