The most recent agreement between the General Directorate of Migration and the Ministry of Education allows the option of obtaining a DIMEX residency ID card for foreigners who are studying in Costa Rica.

According to Migration, this agreement is being supported by the International Organization for Migration and the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Population, Refugees and Migration.

The DIMEX ID for students allows people under the age of 21, who are studying in Costa Rica, to obtain residency in the country. This special resident ID was created to help undocumented people who live in Costa Rica and who are attending schooling in the country, whether it be high school or university.

In addition, the DIMEX also works to request support from government aid programs, such as ID residency card, enter and leave the country without problems, opt for naturalization after 5 years, among other benefits.

This special residence card for students is valid for two years and can be renewed every two years until the person turns 21.

To obtain the DIMEX, the person must be between 4 to 21 years old, be a regular student enrolled in any public education center and request the application form in the place where they are studying.

For kids under the age of 18, the DIMEX should be requested by the parents or those with custody of the child. The interested person must provide a legal document that certifies the age and nationality, such as a birth certificate, passport or ID of her country of origin.

The DIMEX costs $60 per person. The payment can be made at any branch of the Bank of Costa Rica. However, for people who do not have the money, they may receive a grant from the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) or the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Population, Refugees and Migration.

When the process is approved, the school staff will inform the students and guardians. There will also be a letter of approval sent by email that was provided in the application.

If the school does not have this DIMEX request service available, the process must be done directly at the Migration offices.

Students who were already in the process of obtaining a regular DIMEX, before requesting the special student DIMEX, must divulge that information in the new application form, Migration warns.

More information can be obtained at the school, college or university, by calling the Migration line 2299 8100 or visiting the web page.
