Costa Rica’s Men’s Soccer National Team victory over USA 2-0 last night at the National Stadium in San José, on the 14th and final match day of the Third Round of World Cup Qualifying for Qatar 2022.

According to the Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF), now Costa Rica advance to the Intercontinental Play-Off versus New Zealand in June in Doha, Qatar.

"Costa Rica were playing with plenty of energy and had the U.S. defense on their toes at moments," said CONCACAF in its statement. " But the first goal belonged to Costa Rica, as Juan Pablo Vargas thumped in a header off a corner kick in the 51’ to give the Ticos a 1-0 lead."

The pace of the match was in Costa Rica’s favor and the Ticos took advantage of confusion in the U.S. defense, with Anthony Contreras turning in a cross to make it a 2-0 affair in the 60’.

The U.S. sought to pull a goal back, but the Costa Rican defense turned the U.S. away at every turn to secure the clean sheet victory and complete a perfect nine-point final window.

Costa Rica will look to become the fourth team from CONCACAF to qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar when they face New Zealand in the FIFA World Cup Intercontinental Play-Off on either June 13 or June 14 in Doha, Qatar.

"By virtue of their Fourth-Place finish in the Final Round of CONCACAF World Cup Qualifying for Qatar 2022, the Ticos have advanced to the playoff match against the Kiwis, who defeated Solomon Islands, 5-0, on Wednesday to win the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) Qualifying Tournament," they added.

The Intercontinental Play-Offs for Qatar 2022 will take place over a single leg. With a victory over New Zealand, Costa Rica would join Canada, United States and Mexico as CONCACAF teams in the World Cup in Qatar.

The last time that a team from
CONCACAF faced the OFC representative in an Intercontinental Play-Off was in November 2013 when Mexico defeated New Zealand 9-3 on aggregate to secure a fourth CONCACAF berth at Brazil 2014.

There has been just one match in the history of the Costa Rica and New Zealand National Team, an international friendly held on March 24, 2007 at the Estadio Ricardo Saprissa Ayma in San Jose.  Ticos defeated New Zealand 4-0 thanks to a brace from Alvaro Saborio and goals from Alonso Solis and Bryan Ruiz.

The Tico Team stayed scorching hot in the third round with a 2-1 victory over El Salvador.

Last week, Canada Soccer’s Men’s National Team faced its first defeat, losing 1:0 to Costa Rica.

This year marks the 22nd anniversary of the FIFA World Cup. The international tournament is the quadrennial men's football championship played by the national teams of the member associations of FIFA. The competition is scheduled to take place in Qatar from Nov. 21 to Dec. 18.
