Costa Rica is the first Latin American country to provide a digital signal in the Brazilian Japanese standard (ISDB-Tb) in 100% of the country, according to the Ministry of Technology.

The last two analog television broadcasts from antennas located in Cerro Buenavista, in the Talamanca Mountain Range and the Irazú Volcano, in the Central Mountain Range were discontinued.

Digital television is a new way of watching tv, which allows more programs made available through the same channel. It also provides a sharper image and sound, the ministry said in its statement.

Specifically, open television is television channels that are transmitted by air and are received free of charge in each country. This technological change allows the reception of the signal in mobile devices such as cell phones and tablets among others.

According to the ministry, among some of the advantages of the digital television system are:

  •  Digital television will be available throughout the country, whereas analog TV currently is not.

  •  Digital technology has a sharper image and improves sound quality.

  •  Digital TV allows you to enjoy more productions on the same channel simultaneously.

  •  Digital technology optimizes the use of frequencies, allowing additional channels or new services in the future.

  •  Higher quality and better reception mean digital television can be received on mobile devices like tablets, cell phones, and computers, among others.

  •  This technology allows the use of interactive menus.

People who do not have cable, or paid television, must buy a converter and an antenna, to avoid being left out of the digital television signal.

The antenna must receive a VHF signal, which covers channels 2 through 13, and a UHF signal, which covers channels 14 through 69.

In addition to the antenna, a converter must be installed to tune the digital signal, known as a set-top box. It is a device that receives the digital signal and makes it one that is understood by the TV or screen.

These devices must be purchased only by people who do not pay for cable TV service.

It is not necessary to buy a new TV. However, if the person wishes to buy one, specialists advise buying a TV screen of the Japan-Brazil version.

For more information on the digital television conversion that took effect today, the ministry has opened the line 800-2467-2883.
