According to the ministry, the goal of the plan is for the country to strengthen its adaptation to climate change.
The plan proposes actions to be developed from 2022 to 2026 that will allow the country to advance toward the fulfillment of commitments derived from the Paris Agreement.
The world is already experiencing changes in the average temperature, as well as in the intensity and frequency of extreme weather events and other impacts and slow-onset events. The Central American region stands out as one of the most vulnerable to these events, according to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, which is an intergovernmental body of the United Nations responsible for advancing knowledge on human-induced climate change.
The action plan presents six stages to achieve these commitments, as well as specific actions to be carried out by different institutions during the next five years.
The first stage includes researching the effects of climate change, climate services and the development of local and institutional capacities.
The second stage looks into how conditions for the resilience of human and natural systems will be promoted through territorial, marine and coastal planning.
The plan is for improvements in biodiversity, ecosystems, hydrographic basins and marine-coastal spaces for the adaptation and well-being of local communities.
The fourth stage includes the development of adapted public services and resilient infrastructure.
The last two stages refer to the creation of adapted and eco-competitive production systems, as well as defining the investment to carry out the goals.
The plan also establishes that the Ministry of the Environment will be the institution in charge of the implementation of each stage. They will function as the liaison to the public about the progress.
