By the A.M. Costa Rica staff Authorities from Costa Rica signed an agreement with the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre (CIFFC) for cooperation in the management of forest fires, announced the National System of Conservation Areas (SINAC). The agreement, signed by Kim Connors, director of CIFFC and Rafael Gutiérrez, director of SINAC, is part of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Department of Natural Resources of Canada and the Ministry of the Environment of Costa Rica since 2020. "We are pleased to have signed this plan as the next step in the relationship with Costa Rica," Connors said. "Climate change, population expansion and other factors will make wildfires more severe and frequent." The agreement will allow forest firefighters and technical staff from Costa Rica to travel to Canada to receive training, access to specialized research and access to firefighters and aerial equipment (such as airplanes or helicopters) in the event that a fire exceeds the country's capacity. With the support that will be received from Canada, one of the most benefited will be the forest firefighters who will have the opportunity to improve their capacities to respond to fires, Sinac said in its statements. According to the authorities, Costa Rica is the sixth country in the world and the second in Latin America to have this type of cooperation agreement with Canada. Costa Rica has also received a donation of more than 300,000 AstraZeneca doses of vaccines from the Canadian government. ------------------- What other help has Canada given to Costa Rica?
