During this week, about 300 patients from the Monseņor Sanabria public hospital in Puntarenas Province, will get eye cataract-removal surgery.
Social Security and the hospital support team are responsible for the campaign. According to Social Security, this is the big campaign they've ever done at one hospital. They have seven surgeons on the campaign with a goal of 37 surgeries in one day. Specialists estimate that surgeries last an average of 20 to 30 minutes per patient.
The patients listed for surgeries already have previous medical evaluations, speeding up their time spent in the hospital.
The campaign is part of the reopening plan for patients with pending medical services that were delayed during the height of the pandemic. The goal is to reduce the number of pending medical procedures- and eye-cataract surgery being a priority.
The leading cause of reversible blindness in people over 50 years of age worldwide is cataracts. Costa Rica's population has high longevity expectations over an average age of 76 years old, this causes an increase in cases of patients with cataracts.
Cataract surgery allows the removal of the damaged crystalline lens that is inside the eye. This opacity lowers vision capacity, in some cases, it can be so extreme that images cannot be distinguished.
What other types of surgeries should Social Security provide to its patients? We would like to know your thoughts on this story. Send your comments to news@amcostarica.com ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
