On Monday night, the highway opened for vehicles between the cities of Betania and San Pedro in San José.

The highway includes a traffic circle, known as La Bandera, the flag in the English language, since workers installed an 8-meter-long and 4.50-meter-wide Costa Rican flag.

According to the Ministry of Transportation, the highway cost over $21 million, which was covered by a loan from the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI). The Spanish company Puentes y Calzadas was hired for its construction.

The new highway will streamline the flow of vehicles along route 39, which consists of peripheral streets that surround the capital.

The 800-meter-long expressway includes the 340-meter-long highway on the second floor, a 100-meter-long viaduct, a 330-meter-long lower road and a 104-meter-long tunnel.

Throughout its route, it has two lanes in each direction and safety zones of 2.5 meters on the sides of each direction.

In addition, the highway has a crossing of 12 traffic lights, pedestrian zones, more than four kilometers of sidewalk and pedestrian crossings.

The highway connects two new traffic circles in the cantons of Zapote and Guadalupe.

Recently, another new 8-lane highway located in Belen Canton, Heredia inaugurated.
