Back
to school costs parents
approximately $170 or less per
student, authorities say 020623 In an
attempt to prepare parents for
back-to-school budgeting purposes,
the Ministry of Economy carried
out a study detailing what should
be spent on the purchase of
supplies and uniforms per student. The
school year begins today for
more than 1.2 million students,
from public and private schools. According
to the ministry, the cost per
student ranges from $150 to $170
if they attend public school. The
basic package of public school
supplies was used as a reference
for the study which includes: five
pens, two erasers, seven
notebooks, five folders, a
dictionary, a pencil case, a pack
of white sheets, a pack of 100
lined sheets and a geometry pack.
Plus the cost of a basic public
school uniform pack (five pairs of
socks, three shirts, two pants or
skirts, a pair of shoes and a
backpack).
The data is not inclusive of increased prices for uniforms nor the cost of textbooks, a calculator or school bus service, among other basic expenses that parents have to pay.
Price data was collected in more than 20 stores and supermarkets including Office Depot, Lehmann, Pequeño Mundo, Librería Universal, and Walmart among others.
