The Earthshot Prize of the Royal Foundation will give Costa Rica about $1,372,800 (£1million British pounds) prize and a global network of professional and technical support to improve environmental solutions.

"The country today proves once again to the world that we are pioneers in successfully developing conservation models on land and thanks to this we have been winners of the Earthshot Prize initiative," President Carlos Alvarado said. "We will invest these resources in supporting models in marine conservation. We know that we must be persistent and act now to neutralize the impacts of climate change, or its effects will be irreversible.”

According to the government, Costa Rica won because of their Payment of Environmental Services Plan developed in communities and farms since 1997. This plan is developed by the National Forest Financing Fund of the Ministry of the Environment. The country was also recognized for its conservation model, which has allowed a high percentage of territory declared as Protected Wild Areas.

The country was nominated for that award by the United Nations Development Program, the government said.

Also, four more winners of the award were announced in London’s Alexandra Palace, UK, where the ceremony was held. The company AEM Electrolyser for developing technology for improving the climate, the company Coral Vita for developing technology for improving Oceans, the City of Milan for their Build a Waste-free World campaign and the company Takachar for developing technology to clean the air.

The five winners were selected by The Earthshot Prize Council and were chosen for their ground-breaking solutions to the greatest environmental challenges facing our planet and their ability to scale their impact globally in response to the urgent challenges we face, the organizers said in their statement.

The ceremony capped a 10-month global search with over 750 nominations from around the world. The 15 Finalists were chosen by an Expert Advisory Panel, for their potential to positively impact people and the natural world and their ability to help us reach the Earthshot goals.

Each winner was awarded one medal, designed by award-winning Dutch artist Christien Meindertsma, inspired by the iconic ‘Earthrise’ photo taken of the Earth from space from the Apollo 8 mission in 1968 and created from recycled materials.

The Winners were connected to the Awards Ceremony by global broadcast, where The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were joined by Sir David Attenborough, Costa Rican Christiana Figueres, among other hosts.

The rest of the 15 finalists will receive tailored support from The Earthshot Prize Global Alliance, a network of philanthropies, NGOs, and private sector businesses around the world who will help scale their solutions.

Last year, the country was recognized with the United Nations Award for Global Climate Action in 2020, in the category of “Financing of environmentally friendly investments weather."
