On Monday, the Minister of the Presidency, Rodolfo Piza-Rocafort, presented his resignation letter to President Carlos Alvarado, to be effective Thursday, August 1st.

As of September, Piza-Rocafort will assume a new job within the Organization of American States, OAS. "That opportunity arose after an agreement with the Secretary-General of that organization, Luis Almagro," said the government in its statement.

“From other trenches, I will continue to help democracy in our region," said Piza-Rocafort in his resignation letter. "I will continue to help the country, as always. "

According to the government, among the main achievements of Piza-Rocafort are the approval of the Law on Strengthening of Public Finances, known as VAT tax and negotiations with trade unions.

"Minister Piza-Rocafort maintained an intense negotiation process with the deputies of congress to obtain the necessary votes for approval of the bill (referring to VAT taxes), essential to ensure the economic stability of the country," said the government in its statement.

According to the government, Piza-Rocafort also coordinated the development of the Central Pacific region. In April, he led a commission made up of ministers, deputies, mayors among other authorities, who met in Quepos* in the province of Puntarenas, for the drafting of a document which included a list of pending development projects.

"Piza-Rocafort was also responsible for promoting processes to allow the incorporation of the country into the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD)," said the government in its statement.

The Minister of the Presidency has the main duties of supporting and advising the President, working as the link between the government and other institutions, including congress, and organizations such the unions or chambers of commerce, among others.

The government is expected to announce the name of the new Minister of the Presidency in the next few hours.
