The Traffic Police announced there will not be a restriction on vehicle plate numbers in San José City during the holidays.

This year the eight-day Catholic holiday begins with Palm Sunday on April 2, which commemorates Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem to Sunday, April 9, which commemorates Jesus’ resurrection celebrated as Easter Sunday.

Due to Holi Week, the vehicle traffic benefit will apply from Monday, April 3 to Friday, April 7, 2023.

Additionally, the vehicle control rule will be suspended for one extra day, on Monday, April 10, due to the Juan Santamaría National Hero Holiday celebration.

During those days, April from 3 to 10, drivers with any license plate number are free to move on any weekday in the city.

According to the Ministry of Public Transport, the rule was paused over traffic reduction when most of the public employees of organizations such as ministries, schools, universities and institutes among many others will be on vacation.

President Rodrigo Chaves issued a presidential order to grant vacations to public employees. Following the vacation order, employees of all public organizations will go on break beginning Saturday, April 1 and will return to work on Tuesday, April 11.

For that reason, it is not necessary to apply the ban-on-driving rule in the zone inside the capital city, known as the Circunvalación Route, which includes all the streets that are found around the capital city.

After the holidays, starting on Tuesday, April 11, the vehicle restrictions will apply from Monday through Friday, allowing driving from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. and based on the last number of the license plate number:

• Monday: Vehicles banned with plates ending in 1 or 2.

• Tuesday: Vehicles banned with plates ending in 3 or 4.

• Wednesday: Vehicles banned with plates ending in 5 or 6.

• Thursday: Vehicles banned with plates ending in 7 or 8.

• Friday: Vehicles banned with plates ending in 9 or 0.

Police are warning travelers to respect the rules as they’ll be out in full force. The police launched road surveillance operations during the holidays.
