By the A.M. Costa Rica staff The vaccination campaign for children between the ages of 5 and 11 years old begins in January, Minister of Health Daniel Salas said. For this campaign, the country will buy more vaccines from the biotechnology company Pfizer, which is the only one that has authorization from the World Health Organization to apply the treatment to children over the age of 5. This vaccination campaign will begin being available in public clinics and hospitals. Once children start school, the vaccine will also be applied at their campus, according to the authorities. "Visits would be made to schools as it is done with the basic vaccination schemes for this population in the country," Salas said during a press conference that took place at an event vaccinating elderly folks at a nursing home wanting their booster shot. Parents or guardians must consent for their minor to be vaccinated. But this is a simple formality since in Costa Rica, the vaccine against covid-19 was included in the basic vaccination requirement for children. So the parents must comply with this vaccine mandate for children, authorities said. "The law is clear enough to proceed with this vaccination, which is mandatory in this population," Salas said. The revised mandate was established by Social Security in November of this year. It requires the following free basic vaccination requirements for Costa Ricans: the vaccine against covid-19, Tuberculosis, Hepatitis B, Streptococcus, Pneumoniae, Diphtheria, Pertussis, Tetanus, Poliomyelitis, Rotavirus, Haemophilus, Measles, Rubella, Mumps and Varicella. Plus, all girls born female over the age of 10 must get the vaccine against Papillomavirus. In Costa Rica law orders parents or trustees of kids to apply for the basic vaccination plan mandate, as ordered by the Ministry of Health. In October, the government signed a new agreement with Pfizer BioNTech to buy 3.5 million vaccines against covid-19 that will be applied to children, the elderly and the booster dose for some people. Currently, there have been 7,222,020 vaccines against covid-19 applied in Costa Rica. As of Monday, health authorities reported 7,333 deaths listed as covid-19 related, approximately a 1.3% death rate, according to the Health Ministry statistics. The pandemic has killed more than 5.2 million people worldwide, reported the Johns Hopkins University. What have you heard about the vaccination against covid for children in your country?
