The U.S. Opportunity Funds Program, managed by the EducationUSA office of Costa Rica - North America Cultural Center (CCCN), is open for applicants.
Opportunity Funds is an initiative of the U.S. Department of State that supports students in their application process to accredited U.S. universities and colleges.
The program supports outstanding students with wishes to study a complete academic program in U.S. universities, at the undergraduate or graduate level, by covering costs incurred during the application process.
This program looks for applicants with an advanced level of English, strong evidence of leadership and extracurricular activities, and economic obstacles such as a low socioeconomic background.
The scholarship application process is divided into two phases. First, qualified applicants will receive funding for preparation for the standardized exams, score reports, translations and certifications among others.
Second,
the chosen applicant will receive a
full economic offer directly from an
accredited U.S. university or
college. In this case, the student
will now be eligible for Phase II
benefits, which include payment for
a passport, SEVIS, visa, airplane
ticket, and a one-time settling-in
fee. If the
student does not receive a full
economic offer from an accredited
U.S. university or college, they
will not receive any Phase II
economic benefits, the organizers
said in their statement. The
chosen students will work over the
course of a year to prepare
themselves to prepare for accredited
U.S. universities and colleges with
the help and support of the CCCN and
EducationUSA. Applicants
must be Costa Rican citizens,
currently enrolled in the last year
of high school or university, or
already graduated and currently
taking a sabbatical year, with an
advanced level of English skills,
have outstanding grades and count on
extracurricular activities such as
sports, community service, and
volunteering among others. The
application will close on Friday,
Sept. 16 at 5 pm. People interested
in knowing more about these funds
should contact Education USA by
emailing sanjose@educationusa.org or
calling the CCCN line at
8000-INGLES. Education
USA is a worldwide network of more
than 450 centers sponsored by the
U.S. Department of State that
promotes higher education at
accredited universities in the
United States. Recently,
five Costa Rican students won
the “Opportunity Funds”
scholarship.
