For the second consecutive year due to the pandemic, the Museo de Los Niņos  (Child's Museum in the English language) Christmas Lighting Show was held virtually last night.

The event, which was streamed on the museum's Facebook page, is a tradition in Costa Rica for many years which marks the beginning of the Christmas season.

The decision to have carried out the virtual activity this year, even though the museum has the permits for the entry public, was due to the avoidance of crowds of people on the outskirts of the building, according to the organizers.

However, the Child's Museum  located at 9 Ave. 4 St. downtown San Jose, does allow the entry of people during its usual schedule. This month, the place opens from Tuesday to Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Some of the main attractions are the Santa Claus Village among many activities. Also, there will be a special schedule from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. where a special Christmas Music and Lights Show will be held  inside the building. Tickets for this month cost $1.50 can be purchased on the museum's website.

The museum, was built on the site of the former Central Penitentiary, which was founded in 1909 and was in operation for 70 years. The penitentiary was closed in 1979 leaving the building abandoned for many years.

In 1991, the Ayudanos para Ayudar Foundation was created to build the current Children Museum that was inaugurated in 1994.

Another important tradition that marks the beginning of the Christmas season in Costa Rica is the Children Hospital Giant Christmas Tree Lighting Show. The activity includes a Christmas show, choirs performances and games for kids. This year the show will be held virtually today at 5 p.m. on the hospital's Facebook page.
