By the A.M. Costa Rica staff The necessary construction of a new dam at Grande de Térraba River in Osa Canton, Puntarenas Province, was budgeted at $3,893,000, announced the National Emergency Commission. The dam cost was covered by the Commission's budget, after the 2017 Tropical Storm Nate destroyed the structure. The damages caused a massive overflow of many rivers in the area, authorities said. The new dam is expected to be finished in December. The structure is supposed to prevent further flooding and protect approximately 6,000 people who live in the surrounding 29 villages.
In addition, more structure
improvements are carried out in the area,
including the construction of two more dams, one
in Palmar Sur District
and another in Ciudad Cortés District.
There will also be preventive work on the banks of
the Ganadito Swamp and Balsar River.
Hurricane Nate caused severe flooding in Central America, leading to widespread destruction and casualties, during early October 2017, before making landfall on the US Gulf Coast. According to the Weather Channel report of that time, a total of 48 deaths were attributed to the hurricane: 16 deaths in Nicaragua, 14 in Costa Rica, seven in Panama, five in Guatemala, three in Honduras, two in the United States and one in El Salvador. ---------------------------- What have you heard about overflowing rivers in your community?
