Since June 26, due to a massive landslide, authorities closed the access to Route 32, between the provinces of San José and Limón.

On Tuesday afternoon, after the clean-up crew needed two weeks to clean the road, the Ministry of Public Transport announced the reopening of the route.

According to the ministry, the massive landslide was at least 17,000 cubic meters of dirt, mud, stones and tree debris. The trucks used to load the waste and remove it from the site must have made at least 1,400 trips from the landslide zone to the area where the mud was scrapped.

The ministry announced a plan to prevent further landslides from causing the road to be closed. The plan is to build walls anchored in the unstable areas of the mountain to prevent debris from falling onto the highway, said Luis Amador, Minister of Public Transportation.

According to authorities, on Route 32 the area most prone to landslides is approximately 17 kilometers of highway, near the Braulio Carrillo National Park, in San José Province.

Authorities warn that in case of another landslide, the route would be closed again.
