As of June, Traffic Police reported 237 traffic accident deaths, 39 more than the 198 deaths reported in the same period of last year.

 

According to the police report, most of the fatalities were motorcycle riders (112), which is equivalent to 47% of deaths, 30 cases were sedan car drivers and 16 bike riders lost their lives, police said. 

 

Among the main causes of road accidents this year were: speeding with 96 fatalities, driving over the opposite lane with 39 fatalities, driver risky maneuvers with 34 people and recklessness committed by pedestrians with 33 cases among others, police said.



This week, Traffic Police began with their surveillance operations to prevent road accidents due to the mid-year school break.


Recently, over 7,900 drivers were fined for not using safety devices.


Also, police applied over 8,300 DUI tests.


Police targeted more than 18,000 people who received a fine for reckless driving.


Last year, more than 300 people died in traffic accidents.


Traffic Police officers urge people to report suspects of speeding to the police by dialing the 911 emergency line.
