Public Security Minister resigns

The Minister of Public Security, Jorge Luis Torres leaves his post, President Rodrigo Chaves announced it today at a press conference after the Government Council meeting. 


Chaves announced Mario Zamora Cordero as the new minister.


Zamora is a lawyer who graduated from the University of Costa Rica. He was Minister of Security between 2011 and 2014, during the government of President Laura Chinchilla Miranda.


While Torres was named director of the Intelligence and Security Directorate (DIS).

 

Recently, Torres referred to the government's plan to fight organized crime aims to control measures and curb the actions of narcos.





Referring to narcotrafficking, he said that Costa Rica can not cover the Pacific Ocean alone, which is why the country counts on joint patrolling with allied countries. 


"We don’t let our guard down; we are constantly on patrol and reacting to early and timely alerts that countries like Colombia and the United States through U.S. Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) bring to our attention and we work hand in hand with our intelligence units, " he said.

Recently, Costa Rica joined the International Agreement Against Organized Crime, to create a security strategy to have a greater impact on the fight against gangs, drugs, arms traffic and human trafficking. 


Last month, the government announced the "Costa Rica Safe Plan" to reduce crime rates in the country through joint actions between many public organizations such as the Ministry of Public Security, Congress and the Poder Judicial which includes the entire judicial system of the country.
