During this month, the Red Costarricense de Turismo Accessible (Accessible Tourism Network in English) will be collecting plastic lids to build an access ramp at Limón Beach, Limón Province, to make the beach accessible for people with physical disabilities.

The collection program, known as Dona Tapa (donate a plastic lid) consists of the collection of plastic lids to later crush them and fabricate plastic wood. This wood is used to build retractable walkways, for the easy movement of wheelchairs on the beaches.

The organization also makes amphibious chairs to allow visitors for more accessibility to the shore.

People interested in helping can deliver their plastic lids to any of the many plastic collection centers set up in the country. The collection center's location can be reached on the organization's website.

Recently, the organization enabled an access ramp at Panama Beach in Guanacaste Province. The 60-meter path was built with the help of the employees of Guanacaste Municipality in the collection of plastic lids.

Costa Rica has a law in place, Law 7600, which enforces the tourism industry to include access to popular sites for people with disabilities. This includes places like hotels, theaters, museums, volcanoes and national parks among others.

According to the Tourism Institute, there are still challenges to be met regarding access to beaches for people with physical disabilities. There is still a need for direct access to the water, user-friendly showers, parks or bathrooms.
