Patients not vaccinated against covid-19 require nearly twice the hospitalization days, compared to patients who were fully vaccinated, according to a Social Security analysis.

The data used for the study was based on the total number of people staying in public hospitals on Wednesday, Jan. 26. Authorities recorded 646 patients hospitalized that day. Of these, 149 were unvaccinated and 44 had one dose applied. The remaining patients were fully vaccinated.

The 149 unvaccinated patients required an average of a 24-day stay in a hospital. While the 44 patients who received at least one dose spent an average of 15 days in the hospital. The 453 fully-vaccinated patients stayed in the hospital an average of 12 days, experts said

The study determined that the infected patients in the Intensive Care Unit showed a diversity in ages, as the virus is not ageist. While in the group of fully-vaccinated patients, only people over 60 years of age required intensive care.

Most of the patients are over 50 years old and have pre-existing medical conditions, such as diabetes, hypertension and obesity.

The data shows that having the complete vaccination schedule is an effective factor that reduces the need to stay in an Intensive Care Unit at the hospital, said Susana López Delgado, head of Social Security Statistical Analysis.

Specialists continue their covid-19 vaccination campaign across Costa Rica. They also want people to continue with the health guidelines such as hand washing, 6 feet social distance and wearing a face mask in public places at all times.

The vaccination campaign includes nationals, residency DIMEX cardholders and immigrants regardless of immigration status living in Costa Rica over the age of 5.

People interested in information on the vaccination program, should call the Social Security Covid line 905-225-2000 or
visit the Covid Vaccination Campaign website.

Currently, 3.6 million people are fully vaccinated in Costa Rica.
