By the A.M. Costa Rica staff Social Security recorded that in Costa Rica, clinics have applied 8,234,302 vaccines against covid-19. Costa Rica's total population is about 5,163,021. Authorities are near reaching their herd immunity goal of at least 83% of that population (about 4,274,344 million) to be fully-vaccinated. Of that target, 4,028,723 people have received their first dose. Of these 41,403 were children between 5 to 11 years old. The free basic vaccination requirements for Costa Ricans children includes: the vaccine against covid-19, Tuberculosis, Hepatitis B, Streptococcus, Pneumoniae, Diphtheria, Pertussis, Tetanus, Poliomyelitis, Rotavirus, Haemophilus, Measles, Rubella, Mumps and Varicella. Plus, all girls born female over the age of 10 must get the vaccine against Papillomavirus. Also, there were 3,654,209 people who completed their two-dose treatment against covid-19. Another 620,135 people need to get fully vaccinated to reach the herd immunity goal. Plus, another 551,370 people have received their booster shots. People over 65 are eligible for the booster or third dose, but only if six months have passed since getting their second dose. However, there are certain public hospitals and clinics that are applying the third shot to people over the age of 18, as a part of their contingency plan. The vaccination campaign includes nationals, residency DIMEX cardholders and immigrants regardless of immigration status living in Costa Rica over the age of 5 years old. According to Social Security statistics, most of the patients infected with covid-19 in the Intensive Care Units are not vaccinated. Accessibility to getting the vaccine has not been an issue in inoculating people living in Costa Rica. The country has imported more than 8.4 million vaccines against covid-19. On Tuesday, the Ministry of Health reported 7,492 deaths listed as covid-19 related, approximately a 1.1% death rate.
