By the A.M. Costa Rica staff Social Security recorded 8,016,478 applied vaccines against covid-19 in Costa Rica. Authorities have established their herd immunity goal of at least 83% of the population, about 4,274,344 million fully-vaccinated people in the country. Of that target, approximately 92% or 3,965,650 people have received their first dose. About 84% of that target or 3,590,471 people have completed their two-dose treatment. Plus, another 460,357 people have received their booster shots. People over 65 are eligible for the booster or third dose, only if six months have passed since getting their second dose. There are certain public hospitals and clinics that are applying the third shot to people over the age of 18, as a part of their contingency plan. The vaccination campaign includes nationals, residency DIMEX cardholders and immigrants regardless of immigration status living in Costa Rica over the age of 12. This month launched the children vaccination campaign for kids ages 5 to 11 years old. People interested in information on the vaccination program, should call the Social Security Covid line 905-225-2000 or visit the Covid Vaccination Campaign website. As of Monday, the Ministry of Health has issued 3,373,000 covid-passes. They expect an increase of applicants since the mandate will take effect on Feb. 7. The documentation is currently voluntary, but some places are requiring it to access their business, such as shops, restaurants, tourist places, among others. Authorities enabled 150 support centers across the nation to help people obtain their covid-pass. Accessibility to getting the vaccine has not been an issue in inoculating people living in Costa Rica. Costa Rica has imported more than 8.3 million vaccines against covid-19. On Tuesday, the Ministry of Health reported 7,383 deaths listed as covid-19 related, approximately a 1.2% death rate. The pandemic has killed more than 5.5 million people worldwide, reported Johns Hopkins University. ----------------- How far along is your country in reaching herd immunity against covid-19?
