The Community Security Program taught by the Ministry of Security has expanded throughout the country and now native people of 10 indigenous zones in Puntarenas Province received training to improve security in their communities.

According to the ministry, those people received training in security strategies and received their certification during a graduation activity that took place in the indigenous community center of Alto Conte in the southern zone of Puntarenas.

This course on security techniques was adapted to the needs of these indigenous peoples, with the goal that they can learn more about defense and solve problems in their territories, the ministry said in its statement.

The people who received the training had to travel from their indigenous territories. Some lasted hours, even days, to arrive at the community center where the officers provided the course. The two-week training included topics such as leadership, crime prevention, community integration, communication, community goals, project development, among others.

The graduated people are living in the indigenous communities of El Progreso, Alto Comte, Las Vegas; Los Plancitos, Buriki, Caña Blanca; Alto Río Claro, Alto Guaymí, Alto Corona and La Palma.

In addition to receiving the graduate certificate, the indigenous people received metal signs, written in the indigenous Ngäbe language, indicating that they are now communities organized against crime.

The idea of giving security courses in indigenous areas was an initiative of the leaders of these communities who traveled to the Ministry of Security in San José Province to request this training, said Carlos Torres, vice minister of Security.

Community safety courses allow people to develop strategies to surveillance their communities and alert the police on any suspicion of a crime.
