During the sessions of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development, President Carlos Alvarado addressed two of the current worldwide main issues: health and climate change.

According to Alvarado, the only solution to solving these issues is to take global action.  "Not all (the countries) have the same economic margin to face this pandemic," Alvarado said. "Recovery, both in health and economy, depends on global actions that involve us all."

According to Alvarado, part of the solution to face the pandemic is a fair distribution of vaccines against covid-19, "which are still very uneven," he said.

At the conference, the director of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom, mentioned the plan promoted by Costa Rica, known as “the COVID-19 Technology Access Pool” (C-TAP). The plan is intended to share data, knowledge, intellectual property and facilitate equitable access to health products that will save lives against covid-19. It was supported by more than 40 countries including WHO, the government said in its statement.

With regard to the environmental issue, Alvarado said the solution must be practiced globally. "80% of emissions come from 20% of the countries of the world, which represent the highest Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and also have the largest amount of vaccines," he said.

According to the Costa Rica president, the world already has the tools and the money to finance the actions necessary to resolve these two main crises, "but not the commitment to make things possible and if there is no real and global commitment, we will fail, " he said.

The international virtual conference had representatives of the United Nations, the World Health Organization (WHO), the World Trade Organization, among others.

The panelists agreed to discuss their proposals at the United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP26) to be held in Glasgow, UK,  in November, the government said.

What else should world leaders do to solve the pandemic and climate crisis?
