This year, from January to October, Costa Rica's exports increased 26%, reaching a figure of more than $12 billion, announced the Foreign Trade Promotion Agency.

According to the agency, exports increased more than $2 billion compared to the same period in 2020.

Among the sectors with the highest exports are metalworking (68%), electronics (42%), medical devices (38%), rubber (35%), plastic (27%), food (27%), pharmaceutical (10%), agricultural (7%) and fishing (6%).

The main markets for products made in Costa Rica, are 62% South America, 32% Caribbean, North America 28%, Asia 28%, Central America 27% and Europe 18%.

The main export products are medical devices, bananas, pineapple, syrups, coffee, electrical cables, among others.


To increase exports, the government is promoting a plan to allow the medical cannabis and industrial hemp in Costa Rica. Recently,  the deputies of Congress, pre-approved bill for the production of cannabis and hemp in Costa Rica.
