Holy Week is a good opportunity for tourists and foreign residents to learn more about Costa Rican traditions.


The Costa Rican Catholic Church is led by the Archdiocese of San José, which is the oldest Catholic organization in the country. It is made up of 114 churches throughout the country.


Church leaders invite the public to celebrate their ceremonies such as mass and processions from April 2 to 9.


It's a tradition in smaller towns for the lead priest of Catholic churches to march solemnly between parishioners and other participants on the main roads around the church. 

 

Here is the schedule of activities for the rest of the week in the country's Catholic Churches:


On Sunday, the celebration of Palm Sunday commemorates Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem. In San José City, the main procession will take place at 9 a.m. through the streets of San José, from the Soledad Church to the Metropolitan Cathedral.





On Monday, the Way of Sorrows, also known as the Via Crucis procession, begins at 7 p.m. In San José, this is from the Borbon Fruit Market to the Municipal Handicrafts Market.


On Tuesday, at 8 a.m., the tradition of the Holy Farm Blessing will take place in the country town's central parks.


On Tuesday, at 8 a.m., the tradition of the Holy Rosary prayers will take place in the country town's Catholic churches.


On Thursday, the Maundy procession will take place at 7:30 p.m. In San José City, the activity is from the Metropolitan Cathedral to the Virgen del Carmen Church.


On Good Friday there will be two processions. The first at 10:30 a.m. is the procession of the Crucifixion of Jesus and his death at Calvary, in San José from La Merced Church to the Metropolitan Cathedral. The second at 6 p.m. is the procession of the Holy Burial, in San José, it will be on the streets around the Metropolitan Cathedral in the city.


On Saturday at 4 p.m. the procession of the Virgin Mary Mourning will take place. In San José, the walk is from the Soledad Church to the Metropolitan Cathedral.


On Easter Day, the Resurrection of Jesus Christ is celebrated, it is the last procession of the week and will take place at 9:30 a.m. In the capital, it will be from La Merced Church to the Metropolitan Cathedral.
