Three Costa Rican students, Sofía Rodríguez from the Scientific College of Alajuela, Tiany Araya from the Scientific College of San Vito de Coto Brus and María Fernanda Vásquez from the Scientific College of San Carlos, won a trip to the United States as part of the TechGirls program.
The three-week camp for 136 students from 36 countries is sponsored by the Embassy of the United States.
According to the embassy, at the camp, the students will learn about technology and leadership in training taught by professionals from Virginia Tech's Center with the support of Legacy International organization.
"The students were selected due to their commitment and great aptitude for the areas of STEAM education (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics)," the embassy said in its statement.
During their stay in the United States, students will visit NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. Upon returning to Costa Rica, they will lead community projects with the support of the international TechGirls network.
TechGirls
is a program of the U.S. Department
of State, Bureau of Educational and
Cultural Affairs. Since 2012,
TechGirls has trained and mentored
392 teenage girls (ages 15-17) from
countries such as Algeria, Egypt,
Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco,
Palestinian Territories, Tunisia,
and Yemen, among others. Currently,
the program is supporting
approximately 111 young women from
35 participating
countries/territories and 25 U.S.
peers in a dynamic four-week U.S.-
based experience with an 8-month
mentoring program, including pre and
post-exchange. TechGirls
is one of many educational programs
supported by the U.S. in Costa Rica.
Recently, the
U.S. Department of State
sponsored a bilingual magazine
named "Paper Boat" which will be
delivered to schoolchildren to
teach them how to detect fake
news and the safe use of the
internet. ------------ What have you heard about girls looking for assistance in accessing STEAM in your community? We would like to know your thoughts on this story. Send your comments to news@amcostarica.com
