The Washington, D.C.-headquartered magazine, National Geographic, recognized Costa Rica as the best Latin American destination.

According to the Institute of Tourism, the renowned magazine awarded Costa Rica in the recent National Geographic Travel Readers' Choice Awards that took place in Madrid, Spain.

The country received the award for the work done in continuous improvement as a tourist destination, innovation and excellence in services to ensure that travelers enjoy unique experiences, the institute said in its statement.

“The diversity of habitats in this country, wedged between two oceans and traversed by a backbone of volcanoes, has made it the ideal destination to enjoy nature," reads the magazine article announcing the award. "The trip through Costa Rica allows entering forests with incredible biodiversity, walking along beaches surrounded by mangroves and sands where turtles lay their eggs and diving into waters so pure that they attract a multitude of marine species."

Costa Rica won in the category competing with other top destination countries such as Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico and Chile.

National Geographic magazine is a monthly publication that covers a wide range of topics, including science, geography, history, culture, and wildlife. It is known for its stunning photography, in-depth reporting, and authoritative storytelling.

The magazine was first published in 1888 and has since become one of the most popular and respected publications in the world.

In addition to the print magazine, National Geographic also produces a range of digital content, including videos, podcasts, and interactive features. It also funds scientific research and exploration through the National Geographic Society, a nonprofit organization dedicated to exploring and protecting the planet.

Recently, the U.S. business magazine Forbes recognized Costa Rica as a magnet for North Americans.

As of February, the Tourism Institute recorded more than 554,000 tourists had visited the country.

Last year, about 2.3 million tourists visited the country. That is one million more visitors than in 2021.
