By the A.M. Costa Rica staff As of Tuesday, there have been 7,756,348 vaccines against covid-19 applied in Costa Rica, according to Social Security. Authorities have established a herd immunity goal of at least 83% of the population, about 4,274,344 million fully-vaccinated people in the country. Approximately 92% of that target population or 3,944,932 people have received their first dose. About 82% of that target population or 3,505,176 people have completed their two-dose treatment. Plus, another 306,240 people have received their booster shot, which is applied in community clinics, known as Ebais. Only people over 65 are eligible for the booster or third dose post-six months after getting their second dose. There are certain public hospitals that are applying the third shot to people over the age of 18, as a part of their contingency plan. The vaccination campaign includes nationals, residency DIMEX cardholders and immigrants regardless of immigration status living in Costa Rica over the age of 12. People interested in information on the vaccination program for a specific area, should call the Social Security Covid line 905-225-2000 or visit the Covid Vaccination Campaign website. In January, the vaccination campaign will include children between the ages of 5 and 11 years old, according to the Ministry of Health. Costa Rica has applied a mandate for all public service employees to be fully vaccinated. They are leading the way as the government established new covid-pass rules for businesses. Authorities enabled 150 support centers across the nation to help people obtain their covid-pass. The voluntary use of this requirement to enter most places such as shops, restaurants, tourist places, among others, will take effect on February 7, 2022. There are more than enough vaccines available in Costa Rica. As of Thursday, the country has imported more than 8.2 vaccines against covid-19. As of Tuesday, authorities reported 7,353 deaths listed as covid-19 related, approximately a 1.3% death rate, according to the Health Ministry statistics.
