For the first time in the history of public transportation in Costa Rica, the bus ticket card payment system, known as cashless, was implemented, the Ministry of Transport said.

Testing for a cashless payment plan on the bus first experimented on the routes of Sabana Canton, San José Province.

The trial allowed people to pay for their bus trip using one of many payment methods, such as debit cards, credit cards, mobile or smartwatches applications, among others.

Cashless payment allows travelers to avoid the risks of using cash. The fare price remains the same regardless of payment method, authorities said.

The testing plan will allow improvements to be made for the installation of more payment terminals, also known as point of sale (POS) terminals on buses on other routes in the provinces of Heredia, Cartago and Alajuela.

Authorities expect to implement a cashless payment in at least 200 buses for testing. The plan is to incorporate this system into the rest of the country's public bus services.

In September 2021, the card payment system was enabled for train services.
