The Ministry of Health authorized the private Costa Rican company Farmanova SA to import and distribute AstraZeneca's vaccine against covid-19.

AstraZeneca, a British-Swedish multinational pharmaceutical and biotechnology company with its headquarters at the Cambridge Biomedical Campus in Cambridge, England, is one of the few vaccines authorized by the World Health Organization to be used in the treatment of covid-19.

According to the ministry, the request for the Costa Rican company to import and distribute the vaccine was made directly by the AstraZeneca company.

Farmanova S.A is the first private company authorized in Costa Rica to import and distribute the vaccine. "This authorization applies immediately," the ministry said in its statement.

As a requirement, the Farmanova company and the private pharmacies that acquire the vaccine in the country must guarantee that the information on the vaccine labels meets the requirements requested by the health authorities.

In addition, pharmacies must ensure proper handling of the vaccine and compliance with the required storing temperature until it is delivered to needed vaccination sites.

All pharmacies selling the vaccine must inform the National Center for Pharmacology Vigilance about patients with negative side effects. They must comply with the private pharmacies registration system.

There is still no defined date for the first import shipment of Astrazeneca vaccines.

The AstraZeneca vaccine, among others, was previously exclusive only to members of government. As of last Friday, more than 8.5 million vaccines against covid-19 have been imported.
