By the A.M. Costa Rica staff Tomorrow, Tuesday, the vaccination campaign against covid-19 will begin for children between 5 and 11 years old, announced the National Vaccination Commission. According to the Commission, the Pfizer vaccines application journey will begin with ages from oldest to youngest, that is, it starts with 11-year-old children and will continue with the youngest until reaching 5-year-olds. Authorities estimate that the first dose vaccination campaign could reach its goal in June. Children would receive the second dose three weeks after receiving the first. Authorities call on parents or persons in the custody of the children to take them to get their vaccines at Ebais, the community public clinics. People interested in information on the vaccination program for a specific area, should call the Social Security Covid line 905-225-2000 or visit the Covid Vaccination Campaign website. In the case of children with high-risk conditions, they will be called by the health workers of each community clinic to make an appointment for them to receive the vaccine. Children classified as high risk include patients with cancer, sickle cell disease, heart disease, cerebral palsy, hypertension, chronic kidney disease, diabetes, asthma, patients with immunodeficiency, among others, authorities said. Also, children who received the first dose of Pfizer vaccine abroad can receive the second dose in Costa Rica. For this, parents must request the vaccine at the community clinic. The requirement is to present the vaccination card issued in the other country. On Friday, the first shipment of Pfizer pediatric vaccines arrived. It is a cargo of 64,380 doses. Of these 16,380 will be used to continue with the vaccination of children older than 12 years. Recently, the government announced a budget of more than $23.3 million for the purchase of more Pfizer vaccines, the supplies (that this treatment requires for its maintenance) and its application campaign process. Authorities have established a herd immunity goal of at least 83% of the population, about 4.2 million fully-vaccinated people in the country. So far, 82% of that target population is fully vaccinated. So far, the country has imported 8,356,125 doses of vaccines. Of these, 6,002,165 doses were purchased in the first agreement with the Pizer company. This is in addition to the already imported one million doses of AstraZeneca vaccines. The previous purchases are in addition to the 259,350 doses imported through the Covid-19 Vaccines Global Access (COVAX), which is a worldwide initiative aimed at equitable access to vaccines approved by the World Health Organization. Recently, the government announced the purchase of half a million Pfizer vaccines from Spain, that will be used for booster doses. The country has received more than one million vaccines donated by friendly countries and biotechnology corporations. In November, the British-Swedish company AstraZeneca donated 31,400 doses. In October, Costa Rica received three different donations of vaccines. Pfizer donated 130 doses of their vaccine. The Dominican Republic donated 56,800 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccines. And Austria donated 50,000 doses of AstraZeneca vaccines. In September, the country received 69,600 doses of AstraZeneca donated by Spain. Plus an additional shipment of 319,200 AstraZeneca doses donated by Canada during the same month. In July, the U.S. donated 503,100 doses of Pfizer vaccines.
