By the A.M. Costa Rica staff There have been 7,348,965 vaccines against covid-19 applied in Costa Rica, according to Social Security. Authorities have established a herd immunity goal of at least 83% of the population, about 4,274,344 million fully-vaccinated people in the country. Approximately 91% of that target population or 3,922,190 people have received their first dose. About 78% of that target population or 3,364,478 people have completed their two-dose treatment. Plus, another 62,297 people have received their booster shot, as part of the plan to provide free booster vaccines to a certain group of adults and children. The vaccination campaign will soon include children between the ages of 5 and 11 years old starting in January, according to the Ministry of Health. Currently, the vaccination campaign is focused on nationals, residency DIMEX cardholders and immigrants regardless of immigration status living in Costa Rica over the age of 12. Costa Rica has applied a vaccination mandate for all public service employees to be fully vaccinated. They are leading the way as the government established new covid-pass rules for businesses. The country has implemented a vaccination document rule, sparking the government to establish 150 support centers across the nation to help people obtain their covid pass. As of Friday, Costa Rica has imported 7,954,785 vaccines against covid-19. As of Tuesday, authorities reported 7,333 deaths listed as covid-19 related, approximately a 1.3% death rate, according to the Health Ministry statistics.
