have been 7,137,983 vaccines against
covid-19 applied, according to Social
Security.
Approximately 77% of the population or 3,887,480 people have received their first dose. About 64% of the population or 3,215,091 people have completed their two-dose treatment. Plus 35,412 people have received their booster shot. The country has a herd immunity goal of at least 83% of the population, more than 4.2 million fully-vaccinated people in Costa Rica, authorities said. However, as of Tuesday, health authorities reported 7,290 deaths listed as covid-19 related, approximately a 1.3% death rate, according to the Health Ministry statistics. In a study carried out by the Mortality Commission on the causes of death of 948 people in November, 63% of deaths related to covid-19 also suffered high blood pressure. Of the total cases analyzed, 855 died due to covid and 87 had covid but they had overcome the virus before dying. The remaining cases continue under forensic evaluation. The study determined that 599 of the cases had high blood pressure, 579 were patients older than 65 years old, 381 had diabetes and 247 were obese. Costa Rica has applied a vaccination mandate for all public service employees to be fully vaccinated. Also, the government established new covid-pass rules for businesses. Currently, the vaccination campaign is focused on nationals, residency DIMEX cardholders and immigrants over the age of 12. The campaign also includes undocumented immigrants living in Costa Rica. Vaccines are available in public hospitals, clinics, some universities and commercial centers. As of Friday, Costa Rica has imported 7,732,485 vaccines against covid-19.
